Preparation Steps:

  1. Begin by cutting a triangle cone shape out of brown or cream paper. This will serve as your ice cream cone.
  2. To make the ice cream cone look more realistic, use a black marker to draw both vertical and horizontal lines on the cone.
  3. Glue the ice cream cone to a plain piece of construction paper towards the bottom half of the paper to allow room for ice cream scoops above.
  4. Carefully cut the apples in half with a sharp knife.
  5. Pour a small amount of paint on a paper plate. Prepare one paper plate per color.
  6. Place half of an apple on each paper plate with paint, ensuring that each color has its own plate.
Ice Cream Cone Art Set up: Three paper plates with red, orange, and green paint. An apple is being used as a paint brush.

Crafting Steps:

  1. Dip the flat part of the apple into your chosen color paint and dab it onto the paper right above the ice cream cone. This will create the first scoop of ice cream.
  2. Repeat this process using a different color for each additional scoop of ice cream, creating a delightful assortment of flavors.
  3. Set aside to dry, allowing the vibrant colors to come to life.

Crafter’s Tips:

  • Construction paper works better than cardstock. This type of paper is better at absorbing the paint and ensures that the apple doesn’t slide around too much while you’re stamping. This makes the craft easier for working with children.
  • For an extra touch of creativity, try using the rounded side of the apple to create texture by sliding lightly on top of the paint. This will create a fun and playful effect that resembles the swirls of an ice cream cone.
  • To add more delicious details to your ice cream cone, you can cut out paper sprinkles or even sprinkle glitter over the paint while it is wet.
  • For a cherry on top, consider gluing a red or pink button on top of the final ice cream scoop.
  • For those looking to create an impressive towering ice cream cone, tape two pieces of paper together vertically and create a line of ice cream scoops stacked on top of each other! You will end up with a super tall and visually stunning ice cream cone artwork. You can even add multiple pieces of paper and create an ice cream cone as long as the room.
  • Keep some baby wipes nearby for easy clean-up between colors. This will help your hands stay clean for a more enjoyable experience.

🍦Additional Ice Cream Cone Activities:

  • Ice Cream Cone Math: Use the craft above as a visual aid for teaching basic math skills. Children can practice counting scoops or create patterns using different colors/flavors of ice cream. Practice fractions by crafting different ice cream flavors. Such as 3/6 of the ice cream cone is chocolate, 2/6 is vanilla, and 1/6 is strawberry. You can then move into equivalent fractions. For teachers this is a fun and beautifully themed summer craft for decorating the school hallways after the pressure of state testing is finished.
  • Ice Cream Shop Role Play: Set up a pretend ice cream shop with the craft cones and let the children take turns being the shopkeeper and customers. They can use play money, take orders, and serve ice cream to enhance their social and communication skills. Instead of using the ice cream craft cones you could also use Play-Doh.
  • Ice Cream Relay Race: Set up a relay race outside or in a gym where children have to balance a small ball on top of an ice cream cone while navigating through an obstacle course. The team that finishes the course without dropping their “ice cream” wins. If a child does drop his/her ice cream cone, that child must start over.
Titled-Memory-Enhancer

Memory Enhancer: To further celebrate the joy of ice cream, consider turning this art activity into a full-fledge ICE CREAM party! After completing the craft, treat the family to a trip to your favorite ice cream shop or make your own at home after dinner (or before dinner;). If you have any fruity oils or body spray, give your ice cream a spritz for a yummy smelling ice cream cone!

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM!
