  2. Wrap black yarn around the wine cork, starting from the bottom and moving toward the top.
  3. Once you reach the top, secure the yarn in place with another dot of glue. Cut off any excess yarn.
  4. Hot glue yellow yarn to the bottom of the wine cork.
  5. Wrap the yellow yarn from bottom to top, leaving space between yellow yarn lines to give the honeybee the black and yellow striped look.
  6. Glue yellow yarn to the top of the wine cork and cut it off from the roll of yarn.
  7. Glue googly eyes on the honeybee.
  8. Cut one black pipe cleaner in half to make two separate pieces, one for each wing.
  9. Bend the pipe cleaner until you have achieved desired wing shape.
  10. Repeat for the other wing.
  11. Hot glue wings to the back of the honeybee.
  12. Cut two sections of black pipe cleaner, each about one inch long, for the antennas.

Honeybee Hive Steps:

  1. Glue the end of the yellow yarn to the bottom of the wine cork.
  2. Begin wrapping the yellow yarn around the side of the wine cork, going from bottom to top. Apply hot glue to secure the yarn in place as you go.
  3. Also, add hot glue to the top of the wine cork and spiral curl yellow yarn in a circular rotation until the yarn reaches the center, covering the entire top.
  4. Complete the honeybee hive by hot gluing a black button onto the hive as the honeybee doorway.

Flower Steps:

  1. To begin, use a serrated knife to cut the wine cork into thirds.
  2. Apply hot glue the top of the wine cork and add yellow or black yarn in a circular pattern similar to the honeybee hive. This will be the flower pistil.
  3. You can wrap yarn around the side of the wine cork if desired.
  4. Use pipe cleaners of desired flower color to bend into petal shapes. Two pipe cleaners can usually supply 5-6 petals.
  5. Use hot glue to attach the petals and pistil together, creating a lovely flower.

Crafter’s Tips:

  • You can add colorful beads to the pipe cleaners to add more detail to the wings and antennas.
  • If black pipe cleaners are unavailable, you can tightly wrap black yarn around colored pipe cleaners from start to finish instead.
  • Before attaching the wings and antennas, examine the honeybee from different angles to determine the front and back. Use the side with fewer errors as the front.
  • You can hot glue a button on top of all end pieces of wings and antennas to the back of the honeybee to keep all pieces in place and for a cleaner look.
  • Mold a green pip cleaner to add a stem and leaves to your blooming flower.

Honeybee Extension Lesson Ideas:

Plant a Flower Garden: Take the honeybee theme beyond the this craft activity and support the bee population by creating a buzz-worthy environment. As a family, plant a bee-friendly garden together. Choose flowers that attract bees, such as fragrant lavender, vibrant sunflowers, and a variety of wildflowers. Bees heavily rely on dandelions because they are one of the first flowers to bloom in the Spring. Dandelions provide bees with protein from their pollen and sugar from the nectar. Allow those beautiful dandelion weed/flowers to stay in your yard, at least until other flowers bloom.

These beautiful blooms will not only beautify your outdoor space but also provide a nourishing habitat for bees to gather pollen and nectar. Get your hands in the mud, get dirty, and plant the seeds or young plants. Get pumped as you anticipate the dance party your busy bees with have as they gracefully dance from flower to flower. Play some music or sing as they dance among the flowers. This experience will not only deepen your understanding of the delicate balance of nature but also instill a sense of responsibility in caring for our buzzing friends.

Visit a Beekeeper: Visit a bee keeper or a local farm where honey is produced. Research bee keepers or farms in your area, or even reach out to your local farmers’ market for recommendations. Schedule a visit when the beekeeper is actively working on honey production for better observations. Children can draw the steps of honey production in a Science journal to help enforce and retain information.

Flower Diagram: Choose a specific bee-loving flower to research. Draw a diagram and label flower parts such as the flower, bud, leaf, roots, pistil, stigma, and more. If room allows, write a short description of how each specific part is vital for the flowers survival.

🫙Memory Enhancer:

Consider incorporating sweet, golden honey into all of your meals for the day. Start the day with a nutritious breakfast by drizzling some honey over a bowl of yogurt or spreading it on top of toast. For lunch, make peanut butter and honey sandwiches, combining the irresistible flavors of honey and nutty goodness. As a sweet treat, indulge in homemade honey-sweetened cookies or fruit salad topped with a drizzle of honey. These honey-infused meals will not only satisfy your taste buds but also reinforce the connection between the honeybees and all their hard work making that yummy honey! Say yummy honey, five times in a row. Yummy honey, yummy honey, yummy honey, yummy honey, yummy honey. I dare you!🤣
