“Little Bug, Big Bug” is a labor of love that has been carefully crafted from cover to cover by my husband, Jeffrey a self-taught artist and a first-time author. He not only wrote the endearing story but also brought it to life with his own hand-drawn illustrations. (I had no idea he could even draw!)

A Labor of Love: From Lullaby to a Book
“Little Bug, Big Bug” is more than just a children’s book; it’s a testament to the power of love, creativity, and the special moments that bind families together. This heartwarming story began as a lullaby, a tender and soothing melody that my husband would sing to our son when he was just weeks old. Anytime our son needed comfort, Jeff would hold him and sing the lullaby and Henry would be instantly calmed.
This lullaby would later become the foundation for “Little Bug, Big Bug”. It held a unique place in our hearts, a song that not only comforted our son but also enriched the early moments of his life with love and tenderness. Here is one of the videos of Jeff singing the lullaby:
As a teacher and former children’s librarian, I saw the educational potential of the song as a children’s book. Without realizing it, Jeff had created a story that was perfect for school readalounds and emergent readers due to the rhythmic repetitive flow and the use of sight words.
After I convinced Jeff to embark on the journey to bring “Little Bug, Big Bug” to life, he poured his love and artistic talent into the project, crafting both the words and illustrations by hand. His first rendition was cringeworthy and I felt like a terrible wife for telling him so. (For real, it was so bad) I would post it here but he completely deleted it after seeing my reaction.
He went back to the drawing board (with me feeling like I crushed his soul) and emerged with the cutest bug characters I had ever seen! I remember yelling, “YES! THAT’S IT!” The result of his hundreds of hours of work is a book that encapsulates not only a lullaby’s comforting embrace but also the wonder and magic of visual storytelling.
The evolution from a cherished lullaby to a beautifully illustrated children’s book is a testament to the love and dedication that inspired “Little Bug, Big Bug.” After putting in a full day at work, he would continue to work late into the night, sometimes working one-handed while holding Henry on his lap. We wanted to infuse in its pages, the same love and comfort that the lullaby provides our little one. What makes “Little Bug, Big Bug”, even more special is the fact that Henry is our miracle baby. After seven heartbreaking losses, we were blessed with a wonderful baby boy. I can honestly say this book is 100% made with love.
Once all the artistic foundation had been laid, I brought it all into Photoshop Elements (it’s way cheaper than regular Photoshop) and spent what felt like years resizing, editing, and adjusting all the images to fit the format of the book. I could only work on it during Henry’s nap time because the moment he saw the characters on my screen he wanted me to “read” the book.
Finally, after a year of work, we had a book! I know I drove my husband crazy with all the edits and redos but my teacher/librarian heart wanted/needed it to be perfect. There is a quote I love from the book, The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids…“We read with our children because it gives both them and us an education of the heart and mind. Of intellect and empathy. We read together and learn because stories teach us how to love.” That is what I want for you. It is why I drove my husband nuts with redos and additions.
