Simple Ways to Beautify Your Garden

Planting a garden offers a world of creativity and possibility, making it an activity that the whole family can enjoy while creating lasting memories. Not only does it allow children to learn about the work and intricacies involved in growing food, but it also presents an opportunity to involve them in the garden’s decoration. In this article, we will explore a couple of simple ways to enhance the beauty of your garden.

DIY Fairy Garden Houses:

Why not utilize those surplus colored pencils your kids bring home at the end of the school year to craft your very own fairy garden homes? With the help or supervision of a parent, use a hot glue gun to attach colored pencils together, forming the structure of the garden home. You can also employ garden pruning shears to cut colored pencils into doors and windows. In case you don’t have colored pencils available, don’t worry! Popsicle sticks, pencils, or tree branch sticks can be used as alternatives. If you opt for popsicle sticks, regular Elmer’s glue will suffice.

*WARNING: Our fairy garden homes underwent testing on a humid day with a heat index of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, as well as a strong rainstorm. Unfortunately, some portions of our homes crumbled under these conditions. While hot glue proved to be more effective than Elmer’s glue, it still didn’t provide the desired level of durability. Therefore, we recommend decorating the fairy homes in an indoor garden, greenhouse, or outdoor garden with some form of rain protection, such as placing them in a large planting pot on your front patio with a roof.

Create a warm and safe space for beneficial insects like butterflies, ladybugs, and bees. These insects play a vital role in flower pollination, food harvest, and controlling pests in your garden. Gather natural materials such as sticks, flowers, grass, and leaves from your yard or local park to furnish and decorate your insect hotel. Step outside and let your creativity soar with the bugs.

Add Color with Rock Art

Enhance the allure of your garden with a splash of vibrant color through the addition of rock art! As you explore the outdoors search for uniquely shaped rocks. Discover stones that resemble various objects such as trees, fruits, cars, and more. An annual tradition of ours involves a family retreat to the shores of Lake Erie during the summertime, where I am able to collect a massive amount of rocks for the entire year due to the abundance of large, smooth stones along the beachfront.

Use acrylic paint or chalk markers to paint your rocks with creative designs. Ensure a patient approach as you allow each layer of paint to thoroughly dry before applying the next. When finished, apply Mod Podge or my absolute new favorite, a Krylon Clear Glaze Coating Spray to safeguard your creations from rain and heat. This protective layer not only ensures longevity but also imparts a captivating glossy finish to your rocks. I like to call it my crafting finale!

Make Pressed Flower Jar Garland:

Press flowers by using a flower press or even a heavy book. Personally, I used my Grandmother’s Bible until my husband made me a flower press as a Mother’s Day gift. To showcase the pressed flowers, I added charming transparent jar stickers. If you don’t have these stickers, worry not! You can use transparent paper, clear packing tape, or recycled materials as alternatives. Punch a hole in each jar and string them together with twine to create a delightful garland for adorning your garden. In my case, I used the garland to decorate a large flower pot brimming with lettuce.
